How to import an external message archive

Importing your message archive to Google Mail could not be easier.  First, head over to your group Settings page, find the import messages section, and click the "Import messages" button.

Once the import message archive dialogue opens up, you can choose from three options on how you'd like to import your messages.

  • Append - This will add everything from the archive file you upload to your message archive.
  • Replace - this will delete everything in your current message archive and replace it with the messages in the archive file you upload.
  • Merge - This will merge your uploaded archive file with existing messages in your message archive. Any messages already in your message archive will not be duplicated.

Once you've chosen your import option, click the green button to select your .mbox file and then click "Start import".   For large archives, the input process can take a little while, up to a couple of hours for several gigabytes of message archive.
