Chip in: what your members see

When Chip in is on, your members get a simple page where they can pay towards the group's Gaggle Mail subscription in under a minute, with no login. This article shows what they see, and how to change the emails and footer line they get. New to Chip in? Start with Chip in: let members pay for your group.

Your Chip in page

Your group has its own Chip in page, at gaggle.email/chip-in/ followed by the group's address. It's in your group's colours and logo (from the Design tab), shows your note and the group's progress, and is the same page for everyone. Here it is on a phone:

A group's Chip in page on a phone: what the group costs, progress, the admin's note, then the contribution form with amount, how often and Chip in anonymously

People reach it from:

  • A line in the footer of the group's emails: "Help keep this group running: chip in towards its Gaggle Mail subscription." By default it only shows until the group is funded, then disappears by itself.

  • The ask email you send (see Ask your members).

  • The share link from the Chip in tab.

Nobody signs in. Members choose one-off, monthly or yearly, pick $5, $10 or $20 a month (or $5, $20 or $50 once or a year) or another amount from $5 to $1,000, tick Chip in anonymously if they'd rather not be named, and pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link. It takes under a minute. They get a thank-you email straight away, with a link to refund it within 30 days if it hasn't been used, and Stripe sends the receipt.

Contributors appear on the page as first name and initial ("Simon H.") or "Anonymous". Anyone with the link can see those names, but never an email address: only you, as the group's administrator, see contributors' emails. The page is kept out of search engines.

Contributions are not tax-deductible, even if your group is a registered charity, and no tax is added to them.

Change the emails, footer line and colour (optional)

Everything works without changing anything. If you'd like to, the Customise tab lets you change:

  • The ask email and the thank-you email members get after chipping in. Insert a live value adds a detail that stays up to date by itself, such as the group's name, its monthly cost, what's been pledged per month, the balance or the percentage covered. Your note and the Chip in button are always added to the ask, so members always have a way to pay. Reset to default puts our wording back at any time.

  • The footer line: when it shows (until the group is funded, always, or never) and its wording, with a preview.

  • The Chip in page's colour.

  • Your group's goal, monthly or annual, if it doesn't pay yet.

The Customise tab with the footer line options open and a preview of the footer

Reset everything to default puts back the emails, the footer line and the page's colour in one go.

Questions members ask

  • "Do I need an account, or to be a member?" No. Anyone with the link can chip in.

  • "Is this a charity donation?" No. It pays the group's Gaggle Mail subscription and isn't tax-deductible.

  • "Can I change my mind?" Yes, within 30 days while it hasn't been used: use the refund link in the thank-you email.

  • "Where's the page?" At the link in the group's emails, or ask the group's administrator for the share link.

  • "Who can see my name?" Anyone with the link sees your first name and initial, or "Anonymous" if you ticked it. Nobody sees your email but the group's administrators.
